John Delaney led the team of scientists and engineers who, in September 2014, successfully completed installation of the first U.S. regional cabled ocean observatory. Beginning in 1993, Delaney coordinated development of this observatory, which evolved from the joint US-Canadian North East Pacific Time-series Undersea Networked Experiments (NEPTUNE) into the Regional Scale Nodes (RSN) program within the National Science Foundation's Ocean Observatories Initiative

The soon-to-be-commissioned RSN network of cables, instruments, sensors, and moorings will enable adaptive, real-time interactive research on a representative suite of energetic and episodic natural phenomena operating within our oceans.

Delaney often presents public lectures and talks (e.g., TED) in venues around the world on the potential of new technologies to revolutionize ocean science and education.
