This diversity of the processes interacting in the Axial Volcanic System range from dynamics of magma migration to patterns of viral infestation of micro-organisms supported by the nutrient fluxes induced by the shape and the activity of this undersea volcano-hydrothermal system.

One of the primary goals of the workshop must be communication and exchange of ideas among highly diverse, but fairly specialized members of our community.  A step toward facilitating those exchanges has led us to create relatively simple sketches of the spatial relationships within the Axial System.

Please use the figures attached to this section as a basis for expressing your ideas and suggestions for the type of research you feel might be worth funding over the coming decades.

The point of this section of the website is to provide an overview of the Axial System in the hope of stimulating dialogue among and between different types of scientists, or groups of scientists, as we seek to identify process linkages among a host of disciplines.

The primary figure is the map view of Axial showing the locations of two cross-sections through the volcano along the dotted lines labeled A-B and C-D.  The cross-sections have significant vertical exaggeration, so be cautious about using them literally.

You might also identify zones that would benefit by expanding the sketches - like a blow-up of a hydrothermal system or a seafloor venting system... let us know what you want to express your ideas the best way possible.   All input will be placed on this Web site and shared with others.
